Why Kanban is useful in industry
Kanban makes work visible and helps teams limit work in progress. In a workshop, design office or methods activity, this visibility reveals blockers before they become delays.
Rules for an effective Kanban system
- Define the real workflow stages
- Limit the number of open items
- Make blockers visible
- Review priorities regularly
- Measure the time from request to delivery
Measure flow without creating an indicator factory
The 2025 Kanban Guide identifies work in progress, throughput, work item age and cycle time as essential flow metrics. They help teams understand system capacity and make cautious forecasts; they are not tools for ranking individuals.
In a design office, an item may be a change request, feasibility study or definition package. In a workshop, it may be a manufacturing order or batch. The start and finish of the flow must be explicit before measuring.
